On August 22, 2011 NDP Opposition Leader Jack Layton lost his fight to cancer. He left this letter to all Canadians…

“August 20, 2011Toronto, Ontario

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination.

Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue.

I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected.

I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.

A few additional thoughts:

To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To the members of my party: we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.

To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us the confidence of millions of Canadians in the recent election.

To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canada’s Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all.

To young Canadians: All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

And finally, to all Canadians: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,

Jack Layton”

Egyptian protesters shouted slogans hostile to Israel, showing a shoe sole depicting the flag of Israel, during a dispute in front of the Cairo Embassy of Israel in August 21, 2011.

On Sunday, Israel and Egypt attempted to halt a diplomatic catastrophe over the homicide of 5 personnel of the Egyptian security at some stage in an Israeli action in opposition to cross-border thugs, but throngs of Egyptians dissented overnight at the Cairo Israeli embassy.

One Protester climbed several stories of the multi-story embassy building to remove the Israeli flag and change it to the flag of Egypt.

On Saturday Egypt released a statement that it would extract their ambassador from within Israel maintaining the slaughter of 5 Egyptian defence personnel, even as Israeli military chased armed men over the border, instituted a betrayal of the Egyptian/Israeli peace treaty agreement of 1979.

Ehud Barak, Israel’s Defence Minister, commented how Israel mourned the deaths of the Egyptians, which came after raids of Israel’s border district that had exterminated 8 Israelis and ignited the most intense threat in Israeli/Egyptian relations ever since Hosni Mubarak was deposed in February.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Yigal Palmor said, “We are optimistic that they will not recall the ambassador. Presently he hasn’t been.” The Egyptian Foreign Ministry soon after summoned in the Israeli charge d’affairs, presented a dispute and insisted on a bipartisan enquiry of the fatalities, reported the MENA news agency.

It thought the Israeli envoy advised Egyptian authorities his government he had requested him to look at Barak’s declaration at the Foreign Ministry.

The decision made by the Egyptian administration came after an emergency conference with Murad Muwafi, the Chief of Intelligence and military generals present. The organization said the charge d’affairs had been assembled for the reason that the Israeli ambassador was not presently in Cairo.

Cheap Trick, the US rock band has cancelled a show in Vancouver that was to happen this September for the reason that the all the stage equipment was to be installed by Mega-Stage, the company that is to blame for a stage that collapsed on top of the band while they were performing last month in Ottawa.

The band released a statement citing that the concert staging for the concert that was planned for September 1 at the Pacific National Exhibition was being supplied and erected by Mega-Stage.

The band stated that “as a matter of principle, but more importantly, as a matter of safety,” it will never perform on a set provided by Mega-Stage anytime in the future.

The band commented that they investigated all possible alternatives for the Vancouver show without success and all potential alternatives were eliminated by the band’s representatives and their promoter, “leaving Cheap Trick with no other option than to cancel their September 1 engagement.”

Cheap Trick band members only just escaped harm at the Ottawa Bluesfest when the main stage came crashing down only minutes after they vacated the stage because of a brutally strong windstorm.

Cheap Trick has requested a complete enquiry and determination of what caused the stage to collapse.

Fans can receive refunds for their tickets at their point-of-purchase.

Scientists are busily studying the images of the gigantic asteroid Vesta, and this is the first time that close up photographs have been taken.

The Dawn spacecraft moved into orbit over the 530-kilometre-wide solid rock asteroid quietly in July and then started sending unbelievable photographic details of the blemished asteroid’s surface that closely resembles the surface of the Earth’s moon.

Ever since beginning to orbit Vesta, Dawn has photographed over 500 images, while fine-tuning its orbit and slowly manoeuvring closer to the asteroid surface for an improved inspection. The probe will officially begin accumulating scientific data next week when it positions itself approximately 2,700 kilometres above the surface.

Dawn has already photographed the complete sunlit side of Vesta. Last week, it moved over part of the surface that is hidden in shadows and transmitted distinctive grooves.

The mission’s chief scientist, Christopher Russell of the University of California, Los Angeles said analyzing the surface “enables us to determine what has happened to Vesta over the eons.”

Presently about 190 million kilometres distant from Earth, Vesta is the 2nd most enormous dweller of the asteroid belt, a region between Mars and Jupiter beleaguered with hundreds of thousands of space rocks that are in orbit around the sun. The asteroid belt was formed 4.5 billion years ago at about the same time and under comparable circumstances as Earth and the inner planets.

It is believed that the bigger rocky pieces such as Vesta could have formed into planets if they had not been thwarted from doing so by the gravity of Jupiter. In spite of not attaining planet hood status, asteroids are of significance to scientists for the fact that they date back to the formation of the solar system.

The body of Amy Winehouse, the disturbed soul singer, has been discovered lifeless in her London residence. She had been endeavouring to make a comeback following years battling dependence to alcohol and drugs.

Universal, her record label affirmed the death of the 27-year-old singer on Saturday, announcing that all Universal employee’s were “deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer.” The label went on to say “Our prayers go out to Amy’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time.”

London police on Saturday announced that a 27-year-old female had been announced deceased at a residence in northern London.

Metro Police commented, “Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.”

The extent of Amy Winehouse’s appeal was revealed by the amazing variety of individuals praising her achievements following the announcement by the news, including celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who made a post on Twitter “such a waste, raw talent”, and Rolling Stone Ron Wood, who announced that he would dedicate the reunion performance of “The Faces” to Winehouse on Saturday.

Tony Bennett said she was “an artist of immense proportions.” He recorded a song at Abbey Road Studios in London with Winehouse last March for his upcoming duets album. He said “She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent has come to such an early end.”

Shortly following the news, Canadian rock star Bryan Adams Tweeted “Dear Amy, you will be missed forever. All my love, RIP, Bryan.”

The Canadian star had been trying to help out Winehouse. In 2007, it was reported that he invited Winehouse to his Caribbean villa at Christmas on his private island of Mustique, so she would be able to convalesce out of the prying eyes of the media.

inehouse was forced to cancel tours due to erratic behaviour. Just recently a video posted on Facebook displayed an obviously impaired Winehouse ranting incoherently.

Amy Winehouse achieved fame in 2006 with a successful first album Back to Black, in which she sang the song Rehab that became a major hit. She was awarded 5 Grammy’s in 2008 that included “Best New Artist” and “Record of the Year”.

Following her early success, her continuing battles with substance abuse, inconsistent performances, legal and personal troubles eclipsed her artistic accomplishments.

Tiger Woods fired Steve Williams, his caddie, severing a twelve-year bond in which Tiger achieved 72 global and 13 major victories.

Woods published on his website “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it’s time for a change.” “Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future.”

Woods made no mention of a replacement for Williams, or a date on which he would resume golfing.

Williams, a former caddy for Greg Norman and Raymond Floyd, has caddied the last 3 tournaments for Adam Scott. That entailed the last 2 majors, which Woods did not play while recovering from injuries in his left leg.

Williams responded with a smile to questions about whether he was still paired with Woods, at the British Open this weekend, saying, “Why would you ask a question like that?” He did not directly answer the question and he did not indicate if he would caddie for Woods upon his return.

It turns out Williams had known for 2 weeks.

Williams told the Associated Press that he had a meeting with Woods in a board room at Aronimink following the last round at the AT&T National, telling him they wouldn’t be working together any more. Williams commented that he decided to keep it quiet out of respect for Scott, so he wouldn’t be facing questions from the British media while at Royal St. George’s.

The caddie made a post on his website that the news “came as a shock.”

“Given the circumstances of the past 18 months working through Tiger’s scandal, a new coach and with it a major swing change and Tiger battling through injuries, I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time,” he said.

Williams said in a telephone interview, that he wasn’t hurt by being discharged and said he was proud that in his 33 years caddying, he was only fired twice — by Norman and Woods.

“But, he said I am disappointed in the timing of it”. “To be as loyal as someone can be, and with what one had to go through over the last 18 months …”

Williams said he would continue working for Scott.

Mark Carney, the Bank of Canada governor, has announced that defaulting on it’s debt would place the United States government in a dire situation and the implications for all financial markets would be catastrophic and it’s not a situation that should not be tested.

On Wednesday Carney said the bank doesn’t expect the United States to default, and if it did, the effects that would come from it are uncertain.

He went of to say that if an agreement is not reached among American lawmakers by the time limit, but there is no default because the administration makes the principal and interest payments by putting off other spending, the U.S. economy will likely experience a slowdown.

American lawmakers continued to deliberate a variety of alternatives for an agreement to reduce spending that would pave the way for opening of a measure to augment the American economic borrowing limit by the administration’s time limit of August 2. The United States Treasury Department remarked that the nation would then be in default.

Carney’s comments came briefly following the bank release of its newest point of view for the U.S. economic growth, pointing out that the menace to the financial system are staying “roughly balanced” amid a domestic economy that is gaining momentum and a worldwide economy that is heading into more headwinds.

The central bank added to its usual financial policy statement, that it was intimately scrutinizing the prospect that a deterioration of the debt crisis in Europe may possibly pull down fiscal markets and ignite a global credit crisis.

There is only one piece of hopeful news that the ten million citizens of East Africa have to hold onto in the face of an imminent disaster that currently threatens them.

An absolutely vital difference is that we are presently dealing with an extreme drought that has not yet become a real famine.

The head of Oxfam Canada, Robert Fox, said this week, that this is like “a slow-motion train wreck”. He said there is still have a very brief amount of time to safely remove people from the train prior to the crash occurring. He was conveying the fact the world at large has had enough advance warning that large scale relief should already have been initiated to aid people who are trying to survive with dead crops and failing herds of cattle.

The essentials of potable water and basic food is urgently needed, and wells have to be dug to deeper levels to save not only the people, but also their crops and livestock. In addition, medical and feeding stations must be set up immediately. We are starting way too late.

The UN has stated that it is reacting very late because the initial warning signs of an environmental crisis in these afflicted areas of Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and the newly-independent South Sudan, were not addressed by local and world governments and international relief organizations when they were occurring.

Late in 2010, the United Nations asked for $500 million in relief funds for Kenya and Ethiopia for food security, and only half that total amount has been raised.

This poor response can lead to a catastrophe. Very few governments have responded quickly, with the exception of the British. Much of the civilized world are reducing foreign aid contributions due to the world financial crisis and Westerners are disillusioned following multiple years of relentless crises in places such as Haiti, Pakistan, and Japan.

EMI is feeling down under over a recent court decision. Record business EMI has failed in its bid to appeal a 2010 verdict that the memorable Men at Work tune Down Under contains a piece of music taken from a song written for children.

A three-judge board in the Federal Court of Australia has endorsed the preceding verdict that Down Under‘s well-known flute riff was a copy of the well-liked children’s folk tune ‘Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree”.

The board has instructed EMI to compensate court expenses for the petition.

An Australian teacher, Marion Sinclair, who passed away in 1988, penned Kookaburra for a competition for Girl Guides over seventy years ago. The tune about an Australian bird also became an accepted children’s melody in Canada, New Zealand, among other nations.

Larrikin Music, the publishing company which maintains ownership of the song’s copyright, filed a court case in 2009 in opposition to the Men at Work song Down Under.

Members of Men at Work, Ron Strykert and Colin Hay penned Down Under, which trails along behind an Australian roving the globe late in the 1970’s. In 1983 it reached the top of the music charts, and assisted the band in winning “best new artist” in the 1983 Grammy Awards and it continues to be an unsanctioned Australian anthem.

Strykert and Hay have stated that any similarity to Sinclair’s song was unpremeditated; while EMI has disputed that the insertion of the comparable tune was analogous to homage.

Justice Peter Jacobson ruled in Australian Federal Court, in February 2010, that Down Under‘s distinctive flute tune copies a considerable portion of Kookaburra. He ordered EMI to reimburse Larrikin 5% of Down Under‘s fees ever since 2002, a few months afterwards.

Larrikin had swore to look for up to 60% of the fees received since the release of Down Under in the early 1980s, but Jacobson ruled he determined that figure too extreme, going too far and impracticable.

Dyes that are utilised for colouring foods like, Ketchup, cereal, and snacks might be a contributing factor in hyperactivity in children; a United States advisory committee was told.

The United States FDA began a 2-day meeting on Wednesday to judge data about the connection between hyperactivity and food dyes.

The panel is going to be making a recommendation on Thursday, whether or not the regulator ought to enforce changes to the labelling about food additives, or make a request for more studies to be conducted, or to not do anything.

The Food and Drug Administration has never raised any concerns regarding the safety of food dyes in the past.

A United States purchaser advocacy organization, Center for Science in the Public Interest, asked for the gathering to reassess studies on the side effects of food additives hoping to ban Red 40, Yellow 5, and 6 other food dyes.

Food dyes are frequently used to formulate junk food that is more appealing to children or they are used to imitate the existence of a nutritious fruit or some other natural component,” commented the group’s director, Michael Jacobson. Food dye manufacturers would be the only ones to notice the absence of food dyes in food.

The support organization is requesting the Food and Drug Administration to place caution labels, saying that a complete prohibition would be complicated to enforce.

Apprehension over food additive dyes became well known when paediatrician Doctor Ben Feingold, in the 1970s, made the claim that the food colours were connected to hyperactive conduct in children and made the proposition that eliminating them from the diet would be beneficial.

Doctor Susan Jerrott of IWK Health Centre in Halifax said that ever since that time, it’s been easier said than done to perform first-rate placebo-control experiments over a few weeks duration to demonstrate the success of an elimination diet.

The research proposes that in a minor grouping of children afflicted with ADHD, maybe 10% may react to artificial food and food dye, Jerrott said.

She said that it’s pretty exasperating for parents. The only thing I have to say as a clinician and a scientist is, the studies would indicate that in general it’s not likely to be effective but there is nothing to be lost by going on an elimination diet.
